Here is a copy of the speech I delivered at the Labour Party’s ‘Winning the West’ conference which took place in Castlebar, Co. Mayo on Saturday. It was a fantastic event and heartening to see such a great attendance, an indication of the growing strength of the party in the west of Ireland. In the morning session, we explored the issue of health, cutbacks coming down the line, and Labour’s plan for universal health insurance. Workshops took place over lunch, and then, in the afternoon, the panel, including myself, looked at the issues facing Ireland’s rural economy at present. The highlight of the day, however, was the keynote address by party leader Eamon Gilmore. His enthusiasm and drive is inspiring to say the least, and he spoke about the growing strength of the organisation in places like Donegal. Overall, an incredibly worthwhile event.
